Moroccans Do Not Like to Plan

Who said Moroccans do not plan?!Nonsense, Moroccans plan, of course they plan. They plan to plan…and that’s how it remains…

If you happen to be in Morocco for few days and trying to plan your days good luck! Your Moroccan husband is not going to do that with you and even worse, he is not going to let you do what you planned or want to plan.

Now that the hubby is in the US, the Saga continues; Hubby will sit in the house and unless you come with a plan he is not going anywhere and he is not planning anything. Moroccan husbands eventually come up with a plan and that is going to a Café. We call that the “Main Activity;” Moroccan males love to sit on Café terraces, get their coffee and observe – and then criticize! (see previous post for more details on this subject matter)

So Moroccans are good at practicing the Main Activity. The American wife may be able to handle that but if you read the fine print, or if you don’t you will notice that the Moroccan Hubby enjoys the Main activity with other Moroccans. In other words, if you are with him practicing the Main Activity, he is going to look bored or annoyed because he can’t tell you “Cho cho hada ki dayr…”

Grouchy Moroccans

Moroccans LOVE to sit and criticize things; we criticize ANYTHING and EVERYTHING (or almost).

This leads our American friends and family members to think that we hate their country, but what our American friends and family members do not know is that Moroccans do JUST the same or WORSE when they are in Morocco!

So a word to our American friends: it’s nothing about the US, it’s all just a part of a Moroccan lifestyle. When you meet a Moroccan like that, just think of Grouchy Smurf.

Moroccans

This is intended for people who live with Moroccans.

First off, Moroccans are not a breed, are not some type of Monkeys and each one of them has his own specificities. Your best bet is to use a case-by-case approach. This is to say that going to a forum to read or discuss what you should do if your husband does this or that is the most stupid solution you can have recourse to. What Hamid may find offending, Khalid may find it funny and Mostapha may not have an opinion about it.

To help eliminate some stereotypes from Fox News and other monkey TVs, in Morocco we have friends whose brothers sell drugs, sell alcohol and some have sisters who are prostitutes. Of course there are some who go to the mosque but there is no one-size fits all standard.

Some of us eat pork, some of us do not, some of us find it the worst thing to do, some think it is bad but not grave; some of us are hypocritical about it as they would drink alcohol but refuse to eat pork. The reasoning being that meat can be replaced by other meats, the Buzz of alcohol can not be replaced by other drinks.

By the way a lot of us smoke pot and drink alcohol.

Just because we are Moroccans does not mean we can be friends and/or get along. Some like Arabic music, some like Nirvana, some like grunge music, some like reggae, some do not care about music altogether. Some enjoy Art, some do not.

Different Moroccans came or want to come to the US for different reasons.

All of us are here for better lives, however the term “better” is different from one Moroccan to another. Some of us enjoy the American culture or some of it. Some are just here for the job and the money, and when done with work they go home and watch Arab TVs and feel homesick. Some landed here by parachutes but some really wanted to be here.

Moroccans do not care about birthdays. The reasons for this are not scientifically proven, but can be due to the fact that Moroccans live in a society that focuses on the group rather than the individual. Some Moroccans may care about birthdays, but this falls under the theory above that Moroccans are NOT some sort of breed with similar patterns.

Moroccans do not care about hiking, we hiked most of our lives on a daily basis, we did not find it fun, we still feel the same way about it.

Moroccans love to drive, we grew up in poverty and a car was a privilege and still is. We enjoy driving and do not feel it is a painful thing to do as the Americans I know feel about it.

Moroccans HATE buses! We did a lot of that during our lifetime and in all fairness we consider that we did our share of Mother Earth preservation. It is time for us to do some driving and car owning.

Finally I find it strange that some Americans want to be friends with each other just because they are married to Moroccans and /or Arabs (sometimes Persians confused with Arabs get held hostage in the cultural flush flood). If I were in Morocco I certainly would not want to be friends with other Moroccans just because they are married to American women. Think about it, a guy married to a girl from Alabama who likes Rodeo and country music and a guy married to a girl from Manhattan who likes European culture and Techno music…The profile of the girls tells you something about the profile of the guys, they can possibly be friends but not necessarily.
